Sustainability at Chrollo Balloon
Premium materials, an honest stance, clear responsibility.
Event decor isn't sustainable by nature. But it can be a lot better.
We don't believe event decor can be fully sustainable. Like flowers, fireworks or stage building, it is a field where materials are produced, transported, installed and eventually disposed of. Anyone who claims otherwise is greenwashing.
What event decor can absolutely be, though, is far more responsible. With better materials, transparent sourcing, honest claims and clean disposal. That is exactly our standard at Chrollo Balloon.
We work exclusively with premium latex balloons from Sempertex made from 100% natural latex, a plant-based, renewable raw material. These balloons are biodegradable and contain no plastic additives. Sempertex is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 and produces under FSC-certified conditions.
On this page, we explain what sustainability really means in balloon decor, where its limits are and how we respect them.
What sets our premium latex
apart from standard balloons
Latex balloons come in many quality levels. The market ranges from cheap imported balloons with synthetic additives to certified premium latex from controlled cultivation. The difference isn't just visible, it matters ecologically too.
What sets Sempertex latex apart:
Sempertex balloons are made from 100% natural rubber, harvested from the sap of Hevea brasiliensis. The raw material is processed into latex through vulcanization and fully retains its organic molecular structure.
The key differentiator: Sempertex uses no artificial plasticizers or synthetic additives to keep the balloons supple. In cheaper brands, these very additives significantly slow down biodegradation, because they seal the surface and make it harder for microorganisms to get in.
The purely organic formula is not just a mark of quality for look and durability, but also for how well the balloon actually breaks down after use. In warm, humid conditions, a Sempertex latex balloon can break down within a few weeks, much like a leaf.

Numbers with substance
100%
natural rubber
in our latex balloons
We use only latex balloons made from 100% natural rubber. No plastic, no coating blends, no half measures.
240
days to natural decomposition
According to studies by the University of Plymouth & EBPC, natural rubber latex balloons decompose in less than 8 months under compost-like conditions.
92%
of clients previously thought balloons were made of plastic
No joke. That's why we talk about it and set the record straight instead of glossing over it.

What the certifications actually mean
Sempertex is certified to three international standards.
Here's what each of them means.
ISO 9001 (quality management)
The international standard for quality management systems. It ensures that products and services are consistently delivered at the same high quality.
For you as a client, this means every batch of balloons meets the same quality standards. No variations, no surprises. For larger orders or multi-location designs, this is the foundation for a consistent look.
ISO 14001 (environmental management)
The international standard for environmental management systems. It commits companies to continuously reducing their environmental impact across the entire value chain.
For Sempertex, this specifically means controlled cultivation of rubber trees, resource-efficient production and recycling of production waste, for example in the Duro Dog Toys range made from latex scraps.
ISO 45001 (occupational safety)
The international standard for occupational health and safety management systems. It ensures that production employees work in safe conditions and are protected from health risks.
For you as a client, this is an indirect sign of trust. A company that protects its employees usually takes care with its other values too.
FSC-certified production conditions
The Forest Stewardship Council is an international standard for responsible forest management.
Sempertex produces under FSC-certified conditions. That means the rubber trees come from responsibly managed plantations. No rainforest clearing, no harm to sensitive habitats.
Additional TÜV testing
In addition to the ISO certifications, material quality and safety are confirmed by independent TÜV testing.
This is an extra external check that not every manufacturer goes through. For you as a client, it means double protection against material inconsistencies or safety risks.

Concrete practices, not marketing phrases
Sustainability is about more than the materials we use.
It shows in the way we work as a whole.
So what does that mean for us day to day?
No compromises on materials
We use only premium latex balloons from Sempertex.
No cheap wholesale balloons, not even for budget inquiries.
If a project can't support premium materials, we would rather turn down the inquiry
than cut corners.
Less material through smart concept planning
We plan our designs to achieve maximum visual impact with as little material as possible.
In practice: a well-designed photo wall with a precise composition rather than an overloaded setup with twice the balloons. Premium impact comes from composition, not volume.
Careful use of helium
Helium is a finite resource. We use it selectively where a floating effect truly adds to the scene, not as a default.
For indoor designs, air-filled columns and organic garlands often work better and last longer than helium installations.
Fire-code compliant, secure rigging
Our setups are built with stability, secure rigging and on-site requirements in mind.
We take escape routes, fire safety regulations and sensitive areas into account. We work with clean materials and make sure our installations go up carefully and leave no residue.
Responsible disposal
After the event, we take care of teardown and proper disposal.
Natural rubber latex balloons can go into household waste, where they break down much faster than plastic or foil. Mounting materials and holders go back to our warehouse and are reused.
No outdoor balloon releases
We don't recommend or support mass balloon releases outdoors.
Even though latex is biodegradable, released material can endanger wildlife and contradicts sustainable event decor. If needed, we offer alternatives such as lighting effects or controlled symbolic moments.
What we honestly can't promise
We could claim here that our event decor is fully sustainable.
But that would be dishonest.
There are areas where balloon decor is objectively less sustainable than other solutions, and we are transparent about exactly these points.
Foil balloons (Mylar)
Foil balloons are made from an aluminum-polyester composite. Unlike latex, Mylar is not biodegradable and persists in the environment for decades.
We use foil balloons selectively where their specific effect matters, for example for logos, numbers or mirror balloons in premium designs, but never across the board.
For projects where sustainability is especially important, we skip foil balloons entirely and work exclusively with biological materials.
Helium consumption
Helium is an industrial gas extracted during natural gas production. It is a finite resource that cannot be artificially reproduced.
Floating helium installations are therefore not climate-neutral. We use helium selectively where it truly carries the design, and otherwise work with air-filled structures.
Transport and delivery emissions
Event decor requires transport between the warehouse, the venue, different sites and teardown.
These emissions can't be avoided entirely. We reduce them through efficient route planning, bundled deliveries and choosing regional suppliers.
But they are not zero. For projects across Germany, we transport materials in our own vehicles, which is efficient but still produces CO₂.
This honesty matters to us, because we believe:
Only those who know their own limits can act responsibly within them.
What many people get wrong
There are plenty of half-truths about sustainable balloons online.
Here are the three most common myths, and the facts behind them.
Myth 1: Biodegradable means balloons disappear within a few days
Wrong. Biodegradation takes time and the right conditions.
In warm, humid conditions, a Sempertex latex balloon can break down within a few weeks. In cold winter soil, it can take several months.
Anyone who thinks balloons can simply be released into nature is mistaken.
That applies to natural rubber latex too.
Myth 2: All latex balloons are equally sustainable
Wrong. Cheaper brands often use synthetic plasticizers that slow down or partly prevent biodegradation.
Sempertex consistently avoids additives and uses only pure natural rubber.
That makes a measurable difference.
Buying sustainable latex balloons from a budget supplier often still means buying a product with an unclear material composition.
Myth 3: Latex balloons belong in the organic waste bin
Not as a general rule.
Latex is compostable in principle, but local regulations vary widely. The safest option, and the most consistent nationwide, is household waste.
Even there, latex breaks down faster than plastic or aluminum foil. After the event, we thoroughly collect any leftover confetti so nothing ends up in the environment uncontrolled.
What you can
expect from us
We don't promise greenwashing. We promise honest material choices, transparent communication and responsible practice.
In concrete terms: we use only premium latex from Sempertex with ISO and FSC certification. We skip foil balloons if you prefer, and then work exclusively with biological materials. We use helium selectively, not excessively. We dispose of all materials properly after the event and do not support any activities where balloons are released into nature.
If you need a particularly sustainable concept, tell us. We develop designs with less material, exclusively biological components and well-thought-out reuse strategies. Premium impact doesn't have to mean maximum consumption.

Frequently asked questions about sustainability in balloon decor
1
Is balloon decor really sustainable?
Event decor is never a fully sustainable field, much like flowers, fireworks or stage building.
But balloon decor can be made far more responsible: with premium latex made from 100% natural rubber instead of synthetic wholesale goods, with ISO-certified suppliers instead of unclear sources, and with proper disposal instead of release into nature. That is exactly our standard.
4
What do the ISO certifications actually mean?
ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management systems and stands for consistently high quality in every batch.
ISO 14001 is the standard for environmental management systems and commits manufacturers to continuously reducing their environmental impact.
ISO 45001 is the standard for occupational health and safety and protects employees in production.
Taken together, these certifications guarantee that Sempertex manufactures to internationally recognized standards.
7
What do you think about balloon releases?
We don't recommend or support mass balloon releases outdoors.
Even biodegradable latex can endanger wildlife, get caught in power lines or end up as litter in rivers, lakes and oceans.
Several German states now regulate or ban these releases.
If you'd like, we offer alternatives such as lighting effects, controlled indoor confetti drops or symbolic moments with individual tethered balloons.
2
What is Sempertex, and why do you work with it exclusively?
Sempertex is an international manufacturer of premium latex balloons made from 100% natural rubber.
Unlike cheap balloons, Sempertex products contain no synthetic plasticizers or additives. That makes them better not only in look and durability, but also genuinely biodegradable.
Sempertex is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. We work with Sempertex exclusively because other materials don't meet these standards.
5
Are foil balloons sustainable?
No.
Foil balloons are made from an aluminum-polyester composite, also known as Mylar, and are not biodegradable. They persist in the environment for decades.
We use foil balloons only selectively for special effects, logos, large numbers or mirror balloons, never across the board.
For projects with high sustainability standards, we skip them entirely and work exclusively with latex.
8
Are your balloons FSC-certified?
Yes.
Sempertex produces under FSC-certified conditions. That means the rubber trees come from responsibly managed plantations.
No rainforest clearing, no harm to sensitive habitats.
The Forest Stewardship Council is an internationally recognized standard for responsible forest management.
3
Are biodegradable balloons really biodegradable?
Yes, but under certain conditions.
In warm, humid conditions, a Sempertex latex balloon can break down within a few weeks, much like a leaf. In cold winter soil, it can take several months.
Important: this does not mean balloons can be released into nature. Biodegradable materials also belong in the proper disposal stream.
6
What happens to the balloons after the event?
We take care of teardown and proper disposal.
Natural rubber latex balloons can go into household waste, where they break down much faster than plastic or foil.
Rigging materials, holders and frames go back to our warehouse and are reused.
We separate out foil balloons and dispose of them properly as general waste, since they are not biodegradable.
9
Can I take the materials home after the event?
Yes, of course.
At weddings and private parties, guests are welcome to take individual balloons home as a keepsake.
Just one thing matters: pop the balloons at home afterward or put them in household waste. Never release them outdoors.
Air-filled foil balloons with a logo or personalized print often keep their shape for several weeks, making them great keepsakes or decor pieces.
