Douglas flagship store Cologne: a window installation for one of the most important openings of 2025

We were entrusted with the window design for the opening of the new Douglas flagship store on Cologne's Schildergasse. A large-scale balloon installation in delicate shades of turquoise and mint that picks up Douglas's visual corporate identity and showcases the window for the three-day opening phase in November 2025.

Schildergasse is not just any shopping street. Opening there means opening in front of one of the largest audiences in German retail. And that is exactly where Douglas opened its new flagship store on 6 November 2025.
We designed the window for the opening phase, shaping the visual showpiece that hundreds of thousands of people walked past in the first few days.
One of Europe's most important shopping streets
Cologne's Schildergasse is one of the busiest shopping streets in Germany. Around two million passers-by use the street every month, and it is regularly ranked among the top 5 in Germany. For a brand like Douglas, it is the natural stage for a location meant to radiate far beyond the region.
The new flagship store opened on two floors with more than 1,300 square metres of sales space and a range that brings luxury and trend brands together. This makes the Cologne store one of the largest and most visible Douglas locations in Germany.
An opening as a statement for bricks-and-mortar retail
The store is more than just another branch. Douglas publicly presents the concept as a blueprint for the future of bricks-and-mortar retail. A café area in cooperation with Cologne's Café Buur, signature drinks under the name Beauti:Fuels, beauty bars from brands such as NARS, Givenchy, Dermalogica, ghd and Kérastase, plus microblading, a brow bar and treatment cabins on the upper floor.
The message behind it is clear. Today a store is no longer just sales space, but a community space, meeting point and place of experience. For a concept like this, every detail counts, from outside to inside. That is exactly where our work begins.
Three days of programme under the motto Jede Jeck is beautiful
The opening was not a classic ribbon-cutting ceremony, but a three-day celebration from 6 to 8 November 2025. On opening day alone, Douglas welcomed around 250 guests from the media, the beauty industry and society. On the new ground-floor store space, performers included Mirja Boes and the Kölsch rock band Kasalla, with the Cologne men's choir Grüngürtelrosen singing in front of the entrance.
The campaign motto Jede Jeck is beautiful had been present in Cologne's cityscape since early October, with a wall mural on Friesenplatz, city-light columns and a branded KVB tram. The window has to answer an opening of this scale. In such an environment, it must not hide.
Our task: the window for the opening phase
Window design on Schildergasse is a discipline of its own. A few square metres have to carry a message that works in passing, reveals depth when people stop and makes an instant impact in a photo.
We designed the window with a large-scale balloon installation in delicate shades of turquoise and mint. The colours pick up Douglas's visual corporate identity directly, which was staged in a striking mint tone throughout the entire opening campaign. The installation's organic design language translates this identity into a spatial, three-dimensional gesture that carries the window while bringing movement to the façade.
Turquoise and mint as a visual bridge to the brand
The colour choice was closely aligned with the brand's appearance. Mint is the campaign's signature colour; turquoise complements it and creates depth. Together the tones create a calm, high-end colour palette that suits the character of a beauty flagship while clearly standing out from the loud communication of a big-city shopping street.
This very calm is the stylistic device. If you want attention at the pace of Schildergasse, you do not shout. You stand out through a visual language of your own.
Organic design language instead of standard decoration
Opening decorations often look the same. Arches, columns, a logo in between, done. That is exactly what we did not want.
Instead we worked with an organic shape that does not reproduce the corporate identity one to one, but translates it into a visual language of its own. Large and small balloons in different shades form a composition that looks like a spatial sculpture. Every balloon placed individually, every position deliberately chosen. At first glance the whole thing looks as if it had grown; behind it lies careful planning.
What good window design achieves on Schildergasse
Ideally, a good window does two things at once. It communicates the brand, and it makes passers-by stop.
That was exactly the task here. In an environment where around two million people walk past every month, every second of attention is a success. A balloon installation creates that second because at first glance it looks different from everything else Schildergasse shows. It is not digital, not static and not industrial. It is handmade, three-dimensional and clearly tied to the brand in its colours.
Why we particularly enjoy projects like this
Projects like the Douglas window show what balloon installations can do today. They are no longer just event decoration, but a design tool in their own right in retail. They carry brand worlds into public space, create images that get shared and adapt to corporate identity and architecture without becoming subordinate.
For us, this is exactly the exciting direction. Premium retail in Germany is opening up to high-end window design with balloons. We are delighted to have shown this for a brand like Douglas at a location like Schildergasse.
