The first REWE Green Farming store in Berlin: 3,000 balloons for the supermarket of the future

We had the pleasure of designing the entrance of the first REWE Green Farming store in Berlin. With more than 3,000 balloons and a shape that blends into the architecture of the store.

Some projects feel right from the very beginning. This was one of them.
On 21 May 2026, REWE opened its first Green Farming store at Malteser Straße 136 in Berlin-Lankwitz. It is the second store of this series in Germany after Wiesbaden and marks the start of a new generation of supermarkets in the capital. We were asked to design the entrance area.
What makes this store so special
Green Farming is no ordinary supermarket. Downstairs you shop, upstairs the lettuce grows.
The roof is home to Germany's largest rooftop farm, covering around 2,760 square metres and operated by the Berlin company ECF Farmsystems. The lettuce grows there in a hydroponic system, almost without soil and fully automated. From the summer, Lankwitz cut lettuce is set to grow right above the customers' heads and supply stores across the region.
The building follows a clear idea, too. Its load-bearing structure consists of around 1,800 cubic metres of domestic softwood and therefore stores about 930 tonnes of CO₂. The store runs on 100 per cent green electricity with around 200 solar panels, uses waste heat and rainwater and consumes roughly half the energy of a standard store. REWE invested around 15 million euros. 56 employees work on 2,150 square metres of sales space, and the range comprises around 20,000 products. The store was recognised by the IHK as a Berlin Climate Protection Partner 2025.
In short: a place with a clear stance. And that is exactly what shaped our task.
Our task at the entrance
The entrance is the first impression. At an opening, this moment decides the mood, the photos and the attention. We were to design this area without covering up the timber and glass architecture.
So instead of adding decoration on top, we built an installation that blends into the façade and still remains visible. It frames the entrance and draws the eye into the store.
A colour palette that matches the concept
We particularly admired the REWE Group's decision to deliberately depart from the classic red-and-white corporate identity here and give the location a visual language of its own.
That is exactly what made our design possible. A colour palette of green, eucalyptus, beige and earth tones. Natural, calm and high-end. This way the installation does not just pick up the Green Farming theme, it makes it visible. The colours of the store are reflected in the entrance.
No ordinary opening decoration
This was important to us. No loud, interchangeable opening decoration. Instead, an installation that blends into the façade while still making a statement.
More than 3,000 balloons were shaped into an organic form that drapes over the entrance. Large-scale, flowing and tuned so that balloons and building work together. Up close a play of hundreds of details, from a distance one single continuous movement.
Sustainable architecture, sustainable balloons
What is often overlooked with a building like this: decoration has a material, too. And here it deliberately matches the concept.
We work with balloons from Sempertex. They are made of natural rubber latex, i.e. the milky sap of the rubber tree, not plastic.
Then there is the origin. Sempertex sources its latex from an FSC-certified supply chain and holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification; the balloons are tested to EN 71. For a building that stores CO₂ in its timber and grows lettuce on its own roof, this mattered to us. A sustainable store deserves an installation made from an honest, natural material.
Why this suits us so well
We do not believe in off-the-shelf decoration. We build installations that fit the location and the brand.
This project was exactly that. A client with the courage to choose its own visual language. An architectural concept with a clear stance. And a brief that left room for genuine event design.
We are delighted to have been part of this opening. And that our signature can be seen in the result.
